How to make homemade face masks

A great and inexpensive way to pamper your skin is to use a do-it-at-home face mask. A homemade face mask will not only make your skin clean and refreshed, but is easy on the budget too since it utilizes ingredients easily found in your kitchen.

There are several ways on how to make a face mask, and its ingredients all depends on the type of your skin. The common homemade face mask consists of two or more ingredients, with one acting as a base. It would be best to try out a few face masks to see what works great on your skin.

For basically all skin types, you can use several mixtures for your homemade face mask: honey and yogurt; oatmeal and yogurt; egg white and yogurt; pumpkin and eggs; and even cat litter clay and honey. These mixtures will help clean the face of impurities as well as soften and nourish the skin with its natural nutrients and antioxidants. Kaolin clay, oils, aloe vera, and rose water mixed together can form a great face clay mask that can rejuvenate the skin.

For dry skin and aging skin, a hydrating face mask that has oils, honey, and glycerin as its main ingredient is recommended. It often makes use of ingredients that will hydrate the skin and seal in the moisture to avoid it drying out. Avocados and honey, egg yolk and honey, milk, and even dark chocolate in a homemade face mask have been known to do wonders to dry facial skin.

On the other hand, for oily skin that are usually prone to acne, a clay face mask or a clay-based one is often great to remove the excess dirt and oils. Some ingredients of an at home face mask for oily skin are as follows: overripe bananas with honey; powdered aspirin with water, honey, and oil in a mask can help dry up acne and pimples; fresh strawberries mixed with yogurt or sour cream can also help clear the face of pimples with its salicylic content. Liquid magnesium or milk of magnesia, an over-the-counter medication, applied on the face can remove excess oils without drying out the skin. Green clay, mixed with natural plant oils, is also an effective face mask. An at home face mask with strawberry, lemon juice, egg whites, and honey has astringent properties that is best for oily skin.

How to apply the facemask?

Before using a face mask, it is often suggested to exfoliate your face first with a good and effective scrub. Some may recommend using sugar, either white or brown as an exfoliant. It can easily clear the skin, without any damage to it. The new cells that remain after the scrub will then be nourished by the face mask used.

When applying the homemade face mask, make sure to spread it evenly over all skin surfaces. Use your fingers to massage it on your skin. Leave it to dry for 10-15 minutes. Do not “force dry” or “fan dry” the face mask. Just let it dry naturally to make sure that the ingredients are working properly. However, if you should experience any irritation or redness when applying the face mask, remove it immediately as you may be having an allergic reaction to any of its ingredients.
